Getting a NinjaTrader 8 strategy from a download to a working chart takes about ten minutes once you know the order. This guide covers the official install method for both Vantedge strategies, the chart setup each one needs, and the problems people hit most often.

What you receive

After purchase you get a NinjaTrader 8 package to download and a licence key by email. The package includes an INSTALL.txt with the details for your version, and a PDF user guide.

Step 1: install with Install.ps1 -Clean

The official installation method is to run the package's Install.ps1 script with the -Clean option. Follow INSTALL.txt for the exact steps. Use this method rather than copying files by hand, so every file ends up where NinjaTrader expects it.

Step 2: compile in NinjaTrader

Open NinjaTrader 8, then New > NinjaScript Editor, and press F5 to compile. When it finishes without errors, the strategies and indicators are available to add to charts.

Step 3: set up the chart

This is where the two strategies differ.

FlowPilot

  • Open a chart of ES or NQ.
  • In Data Series, tick Tick Replay. Without it, historical bars have no bid/ask detail and the footprint stays empty.
  • Optional: right-click the chart, choose Templates > Load and pick the Vantedge Footprint template to see the imbalances the strategy trades.

BookPilot

  • Make sure your data feed provides Level 2 market depth for the instrument. The SuperDOM should show several levels on each side.
  • For Market Replay, download replay data for the instrument via Tools > Historical Data > Load > Market Replay. Replay data includes depth.
  • Open a chart of ES or NQ.

Step 4: open Chart Trader

Right-click the chart and choose Chart Trader. Both strategies add their control buttons below it, so open it before you add the strategy.

Step 5: add the strategy and your key

  • Right-click the chart, Strategies, then Vantedge FlowPilot or Vantedge BookPilot.
  • Paste your key into the License Key setting. Leave API URL at its default unless support asks you to change it.
  • Choose the Sim101 account.
  • Enable the strategy.

Each key works on 2 devices. Without a valid key the strategy does not arm.

Step 6: read the Output window

Open the NinjaScript Output window (New > NinjaScript Output). It shows licensing messages for both strategies. BookPilot also prints its bracket converted to ticks for your instrument, for example 150 $ target = 30 ticks on NQ.

Step 7: first arm

  • FlowPilot in its default Auto mode arms itself (Arm Both) at the next bar close.
  • BookPilot arms when you press With Bias on the panel. If no depth arrived in the last 5 seconds, it refuses and tells you why.

Common problems

  • No panel buttons: open Chart Trader, then disable and re-enable the strategy.
  • "MISSING LICENSE KEY" or "Cannot arm: Unlicensed": paste the key into License Key, check you are online and read the Output window.
  • FlowPilot has no trades in the Strategy Analyzer: turn on Tick Replay and use tick-based historical data.
  • BookPilot has no trades in the Strategy Analyzer: expected. It trades in real time and Market Replay only.
  • BookPilot says no Level 2 data in the last 5 s: your feed has no depth for the instrument, or replay is paused.

Both user guides have the full first-run steps: FlowPilot and BookPilot. Download and licence details are on the installation page, and the BookPilot page lists what its package includes.

Before you leave Sim101

Run several sessions on SIM, and in Market Replay for BookPilot, before switching the account. Check the daily goal, max loss and cooldown against your own limits first. Both default to a 2500 daily profit goal and a 750 daily max loss, which may not match your account or your prop firm's rules, so set them deliberately rather than leaving them as shipped.

A clean install is only the start; futures trading still carries the risk of large losses. Keep both strategies on SIM, and BookPilot in Market Replay too, until you trust them, before any evaluation, funded or live account.
